Holy Week Tradition: Penitencia

I used to be afraid of penitensya (bloody whipping tradition in Philippines), even if I grow old seeing it yearly. Tatay used to be one of the Hudyos whom usually whip the “gumaganap” whenever they stopped on pabasa or church. They organize the event annually.

The last time I watched it was when I was barely 7 years old, I rode in a bike with tatay. I was crying because blood is everywhere, but little did I know that I after years of watching it on the sideline, I will be able to watch it again, this time tatay is no longer around.
Preparation for the penitensya, wherein they tied themselves and nagpapadugo (using blades)

Many people are trying to see this annual event, I even saw some media covering the penitensya.

Start of the procession.

Approximately 80 "gumaganap" were present last Good Friday

Long line of "gumaganap"

They were divided into 2 lines.

First stop was on the old Church in La Loma Cemetery

Some were carrying a cross.
